What is Artificial Intelligence?

Learning Objectives

  • Define artificial intelligence and its core concepts
  • Understand the difference between AI, machine learning, and deep learning
  • Recognize the history and evolution of AI
  • Identify popular AI tools available today

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding.

At its core, AI enables computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence—like recognizing speech, making decisions, translating languages, or identifying patterns in data.

AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning

Artificial Intelligence is the broadest concept—any technique that enables computers to mimic human intelligence.

Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI that enables systems to learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Instead of following rigid instructions, ML systems identify patterns in data.

Deep Learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple layers (hence "deep") to analyze data. It powers technologies like facial recognition and voice assistants.

A Brief History

The term "artificial intelligence" was coined in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference. Early AI research focused on problem-solving and symbolic methods. Progress has accelerated dramatically in recent years due to:

  • Massive increases in computing power
  • Availability of large datasets (big data)
  • Breakthroughs in algorithms and neural network architectures

Popular AI Tools Today

AI has become accessible through powerful tools that anyone can use. Here are some of the leading AI platforms available today:

  • ChatGPT - OpenAI's conversational AI model for text generation, coding assistance, and problem-solving
  • Telli (by KSI) - Keystone Strategies International's AI assistant for strategic business intelligence
  • GROK - Advanced AI platform designed for real-time information processing and analysis
  • Anthropic Claude - AI assistant focused on safety and helpfulness with strong reasoning capabilities
  • Google Gemini - Google's multimodal AI that can understand and generate text, images, and code
  • Microsoft Copilot - AI assistant integrated across Microsoft products for productivity enhancement

These tools represent the cutting edge of AI technology, making advanced capabilities accessible to businesses and individuals worldwide.

Why AI Matters Today

AI is transforming every industry—from healthcare diagnosis to financial fraud detection, from personalized recommendations to autonomous vehicles. Understanding AI is no longer optional for business leaders; it's essential.
